Arsenal to fight Eduardo ban

Published: 04-09-2009

Arsenal have confirmed they will appeal against the two-match ban given to Eduardo by UEFA for diving to win a penalty against Celtic in August.

The Croatian striker was found guilty of "deceiving the referee" for falling under the challenge of Celtic's goalkeeper Artur Boruc in the Champions League match.

The subsequent penalty proved to be a turning point for Arsenal, who were struggling against a strong Celtic team. Arsenal went on to win the match 3-1 (5-1 on aggregate).

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, had already accused UEFA of conducting a "witch-hunt", adding

"The club is in receipt of Uefa's reasoned decision in relation to the charge against Eduardo ... We strongly believe that the decision taken is deeply flawed and not based on any forensic review of the video evidence available.

"There are obvious errors and inconsistencies in Uefa's judgment and we intend to appeal."

If upheld, Eduardo would miss Arsenal's opening two Champions League group matches at Standard Liege on 16 September and at home against Olympiacos on 29 September.
