Celtic

Celtic Football Club was formed in 1887 by a Marist Brother as a way to to raise money for the poor in the area. Celtic played their inaugural game on May 28, 1888 in a friendly 5-2 win watched by a crowd of 2,000. The opposition that day was team from the other end of the city known as Rangers

In 1889, Celtic reached the Scottish Cup final in their first full season of competition, but lost 2-1 to Third Lanark. However, they won their first trophy, the North-Eastern Cup, beating Cowlairs 6-1 in the final.

In 1892 Celtic beat Queen's Park 5-2 at to win the Scottish Cup for the first time in their and a few months later, the club moved to their present ground. The following season, Celtic went on to win the Scottish League Champoinship.

Between 1905 and 1910, Celtic go on to win the Scottish League Championship for six successive seasons. They follow this up a few years later between 1914 and 1917 by winning it again four times in succession.

In 1937, Celtic beat in the Scottish Cup Final infront of 146,443 football fans at - a record that remains for a club match in Europe.

In 1964, Celtic reached the semi-final of the European Cup-Winners' Cup in only their second European campaign in European competition, but lost 4-3 on aggregate to MTK Budapest. The following season Jock Stein took over as manager in March 1965, and guided Celtic to their first victory in a Scottish Cup final in 11 years with a 3-2 win over .

However, 1967 was the year that Celtic completed their most glorious season by winning every competition entered - Scottish League, Scottish Cup, League Cup, Glasgow Cup and the European Cup. The climax of the season is the 2-1 victory over Inter Milan in the European Cup final playeded at the Estadio Nacional in Lisbon on May 25, 1967. Celtic thus became the first British club to win Europe's most coveted trophy.

in 1978, Billy McNeill, captain of the 1967 team, succeeded Jock Stein as manager. During Stein's 12-year tenure Celtic enjoyed 25 successes in major competitions.

1978 saw Celtic winning their first "double" in 11 years and the accomplishment marked Celtic's 35th league title, and the 28th Scottish Cup.

In 2001, Celtic achieve a back to back series of victories over Rangers in February (semi final of the League Cup at Hampden and a league encounter at Celtic Park) and in March, Celtic took the first silverware of the season, retaining the League Cup after a 3-0 victory over Kilmarnock which included a Henrik Larsson hat-trick.
