Liverpool

Liverpool F.C. was formed on the 15th of March 1892. It was at John Houlding's house in Anfield Road that he and his closest friends left from Everton FC, formed a new club. William.E.Barclay, a great football enthusiast, strongly suggested that they should go on with a new name: Liverpool. In 1894 Liverpool FC adopted the City's colour of red for the playing shirts and by 1901 the Liverbird as the crest. Eight years in 1902 Liverpool Football Club rose to the pinnacle of the English game with a title triumph that set the tone for future generations at Anfield.

In 1950 Arsenal provided the opposition when Liverpool made their first appearance beneath the twin towers of . It should have been a momentous occasion in the club's history but on a grey day in the capital, a 2-0 defeat prolonged the Reds’ wait for glory.

December 1st 1959 is a date that will forever be etched in the annals of Anfield history. For it was on this day that Liverpool Football Club announced Huddersfield Town boss Bill Shankly would be their new manager in succession to Phil Taylor. Shanks breezed through the gates of a then decrepit old stadium like a breath of fresh air and immediately set about the task of revolutionising the training schedule, modernising the facilities and radically shaking up the playing staff. Shankly's officially took charge of his first Liverpool game on December 19th. Unfortunately, he could only sit and watch as the Reds crashed to a 4-0 home defeat against Cardiff City. Another loss at Charlton followed a week later but on December 28th he recorded his first win – 2-0 in the Anfield return against the Addicks – and a new era was up and running.

1 May 1965 is a day forever remembered as the greatest in the club’s history. It was the day Liverpool beat Leeds United at Wembley to lift their first ever FA Cup thanks to goals scored by and .

May 25 1977 is the other date that will forever hold special significance for Liverpudlians. For it was on this balmy night in the Italian capital of Rome that proudly held aloft the gleaming silver trophy that is the – the greatest prize in club football.

Liverpool Football Club kicked off the 1985/86 under a giant cloud. The events of Heysel just four months previous had heaped shame on Anfield but that grey cloud was to have a glorious silver lining. Under the inspirational guidance of player/manager Kenny Dalglish the Reds overcome the challenge of reigning league champions Everton to capture a 16th championship crown.

Just four days after dramatically snatching the FA Cup from Arsenal's grasp in Cardiff, and with the Worthington Cup already safely tucked away in the Anfield trophy cabinet, Liverpool's class of 2001 completed an unprecedented cup treble on the never-to-be-forgotten night of Wednesday 16 May.

The 2006 FA Cup Final will be remembered in Anfield folklore as the Gerrard final as captain fantastic Steven Gerrard rescued Liverpool with a stunning last minute equaliser to break West Ham's hearts and force extra-time.
