Manchester City

1880 St. Mark’s Church, West Gorton, forms football team – this later evolves to become Manchester City FC. In 1887 St Marks renamed Ardwick AFC and moved to Hyde Road, the Club’s first properly enclosed ground. 1891 Ardwick win the Manchester Cup for the first time (beating Newton Heath in the final), and join the Alliance League. 1892 Ardwick beat Bolton Wanderers to win the Manchester Cup for a second time. They become founder members of the Second Division of the Football League. In 1894 Ardwick AFC reforms as Manchester City Football Club in a bid to create a club to represent the whole of Manchester.

In 1904 Manchester City become first Manchester side to win a major trophy when they win the at Crystal Palace and finish second in the League. The following year, a controversial game with Aston Villa results in widespread investigations into the Club’s finances. Ultimately the Club is nearly destroyed as the Chairman, manager, two directors and 17 players are suspended and fined.

In 1923 Maine Road opens with a capacity approaching 90,000 and during its first season stages a game watched by 76,166 – the largest footballing crowd in Manchester at the time.

In 1934 City record provincial crowd of 84,569 recorded at Maine Road for City V Stoke City. Manchester City win FA Cup final v Portsmouth. Three years later, win the League Championship for the first time.

After losing out in the FA Cup final the previous year, City defeat Birmingham City in the 1956 FA Cup final memorable for the heroics of goalkeeper .

In 1968, Newcastle are defeated on last day of season to bring League Championship back to . Manchester becomes first English city to have two sides competing in the European Cup (Manchester City as Champions, Manchester United as ). The following season, City win the FA Cup by beating Leicester 1-0 at Wembley.

2002 see the Commonwealth Games at the City of Manchester Stadium as well as seeing City Promoted as Champions of Division One. The following season Maine Road stages its last football match and then the Club moves to the City of Manchester Stadium. The first competitive match is against Welsh side TNS in the UEFA Cup. In 2004 City of Manchester Stadium stages first international match when Japan beat Iceland. England’s first game at the stadium sees them draw with Japan. In 2005 Former City player succeeds as manager.
